Torre do Frade
More than a project, a family.
Our story
Torre do Frade has been in the family since 1839. Our history is rich and full of twists and turns. This house was a convent for five centuries before it came to us. Our wines reflect our deep bond with this land and our respect for the terroir of the Alto Alentejo.
Straightforward wines, with no heavy make-up. Here we want fruit and freshness, not complexity or a very exuberant body. Thanks to their elegance, these wines are enjoyable on their own, yet they pair well with light, easy dishes, like the ones we sometimes eat by the pool. They are aged only in stainless steel: fruit is the star of the show. This category is home to the Petit Virgo range.
Wines that sit halfway between the pool and the dinner table. Body and structure gain some complexity, but we still don't want deep, heavy wines. Elegance remains, with a touch of complexity; some wines have brief contact with oak, never intense, just enough to add breadth and texture. That is why they suit the lunch table, where dishes are lighter and less festive. This category is home to the Virgo range.
Wines that call for a set table and time to talk. They have more body, structure and complexity than our lunch wines, while keeping the elegance and freshness that define the house. Wines for richer dishes, at a family dinner or among friends. This category is home to the V de Virgo range.
Wines with layer upon layer of complexity, whether from their concentration or from time in oak. They go beyond being a drink: they are a true journey through the senses. They too have their moment, at the table or simply with good conversation, but their intensity and depth make them wines for special occasions. This category is home to the Torre do Frade and Auditoria ranges.

Producer Fernando Carpinteiro Albino
Our vineyard lies at the edge of the village of Santo Aleixo, in the municipality of Monforte, district of Portalegre. At 500 m above sea level, on the slopes rising towards the Serra de São Mamede, the soils are schist and the wide difference between day and night temperatures plays a key role in the profile of Torre do Frade wines. We simply try to respect what the land gives us and grow grapes that make wines expressive of this terroir.
